Each time, he said those words clearly and with warmth. It felt better each time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Tom realized that he&#8217;d never heard it\u00a0spoken that way before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>This is my son, Tom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The impact of these words sums up what became clear over the five days together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It wasn&#8217;t my imagination that Tom and Richard have much in common &#8211; even though\u00a0they are both very unusual people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_7480-e1478394463704.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9570 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_7480-e1478394463704-300x262.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Richard secret\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_7480-e1478394463704-300x262.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_7480-e1478394463704-768x670.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/IMG_7480-e1478394463704.jpg 821w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/?p=9488\" target=\"_blank\">The cousins<\/a> remarked how much they think alike and talk alike. They shook their heads, as though amazed that there could be more than one Richard. Which is just how I feel &#8211; thrilled that there could be another human like Tom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When Richard talked about his flashlight collection, or when Tom made an observation about the town, the other would be nodding along, laughing along, understanding completely after just a few words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">After the first few times this happened, Richard started to pull out an imaginary sheet of paper with a list of traits. &#8220;Check!&#8221; He&#8217;d tick\u00a0the box with an imaginary pen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There were so many check marks by today that I was sorry I hadn&#8217;t been writing them all down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The bonding with Richard was amplified by the presence of Danielle, a sister in wit and brains. She&#8217;s a well-educated and well-traveled woman who nonetheless is down to earth in that way Tom and I really appreciate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Photo-Oct-22-1-50-05-PM-e1478394646665.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9573\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Photo-Oct-22-1-50-05-PM-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Danielle Tom Richard museum\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Danielle\u00a0wasn&#8217;t expecting to meet a brother on this trip, but she handled it with great aplomb. We liked her for that alone, and it just got better from there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I loved watching them together. And now\u00a0I have a sister-in-law &#8211; another joy, in a week of new joys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Last night I gave each of them a Christmas ornament of fused glass &#8211; the same pattern of colors, but composed slightly different for each person. Richard is\u00a0blue, Tom green, Danielle yellow, Jane red and Sara lavender:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ornament.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9509\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ornament-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"ornament\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ornament-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ornament-768x537.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.lisaschnellinger.com\/pennies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ornament-1024x717.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;Now you are always united,&#8221; I told them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We kept putting off our departure today, but when it got to be 3 o&#8217;clock, the dwindling hours of daylight forced us to get up from our chairs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Last photos, long goodbyes&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It felt like being physically wrenched apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">&#8220;You can&#8217;t drive if you&#8217;re crying,&#8221; Tom said softly as I finally pulled the car away from the curb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Only the promise of future meetings made it possible to drive on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I&#8217;d drive any distance to hear Richard introduce Tom again. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>This is my son, Tom.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Today&#8217;s penny is a 2010, for the 10 new family members Tom has met.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is my son, Tom.
